MISSION STATEMENT

MISSION STATEMENT

Our main objective is to alleviate the immediate suffering of families affected by natural or man-made disasters. Our primary focus is on disasters caused by tornadoes, major grass fires, floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, and other major disasters. We are currently providing support to families affected by home fires and special circumstances. Disaster Helping Hands has been an officially recognized 501(C)3 tax-exempt organization since February 15, 2006. Although we began assisting families in 2005, we have been operating as a small organization with a disaster focus. We have three members on our board, as required by law, and rely on volunteers to accomplish our mission. While all board members are salaried positions, to date, no one has received any salary or form of payment. All funds collected have been dedicated to mission accomplishment and our building project. To date, we have given away over 225 tons of appliances, food, and furniture to families and communities that meet our requirements. The items that we have given to families and communities were donated by businesses, families downsizing or dealing with the death of a family member, families relocating, estate settlements, state institutions, and other sources. We help those in need by providing them with major household items necessary to re-establish their lives to some degree of normalcy when they are least likely to help themselves financially or emotionally. We have helped many families in the Wichita Falls Texas Area and surrounding communities following house fires. Limited assistance has also been extended to senior citizens, First Step, the Wichita Falls Boys and Girls Club, churches, and the Area Agency on Aging of North Texas. We have also helped many communities in surrounding states following major disasters.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

We are currently in the process of collecting funds to build our own office and storage space, measuring 9000 square feet (60x150). In the past, we have utilized donated space to carry out our mission, but our temporary situation has extended to five years without a proper office and limited storage space. This uncertainty creates instability and hinders our ability to serve the community effectively in times of crisis. In 2009, we began this project with the goal of securing our own building and developing long-term plans to become self-sustaining while providing essential services and job opportunities in our community. We need to complete this project in stages, and our final goal is to raise $600,000.00 for the construction of the new office and storage building. Phase 1 of our project is now complete, as we have achieved our initial fundraising goal of $150,000.00. As of December 31, 2012, we have raised $171,995.00, with $139,662.00 in the bank and no debts.

MR LEON GREEN

FOUNDER

Hello there, my name is Leon Green and I'm 71 years old. I'm the Founder and Executive Director of Disaster Helping Hands. I served in the Air Force for 24 and a half years and retired as an Honorably Discharged Retired Air Force MSgt. After retiring, I started my own business selling Office Supplies and computer Supplies and later got involved in Vending. My income comes from my Military Retirement, Social Security, and my small Supply business. I feel blessed to be in good health and at this point in my life, I want to give back to the community in a way that brings personal fulfillment. We all have gifts and talents that can be shared, no matter our age, to make our communities better during normal times or after disasters. I've chosen to work in the area of disaster relief, whether it's a personal disaster like a house fire or a larger community disaster like tornados, grass fires, floods, and hurricanes. I need your help to complete our project and make a positive impact in these situations.
